Adults are about 10-14 mm long. They have narrow-oval bodies with brownish-black thorax and wings that are edged with orange-red colour. The abdomen is orange-red, the head, legs and antennae are black. Nymphs are bright red. Nymphs and adults have piercing-sucking mouthparts. This insect feeds mainly on the juices of the leaves and flowers of the boxelder (Manitoba maple) but may attack other plants. In the fall and on warm winter days, adults congregate in large numbers, particularly on the warm southern exposure of tree trunks and homes (and enter buildings). Boxelder bugs undergo gradual metamorphosis. They overwinter as adults in homes or other dry, protected places. Bright red eggs are laid on the bark of the boxelder and hatch as the leaves emerge in spring.
